About Our Karate

At Okinawa Goju Ryu Brisbane, we focus not just on karate, but more broadly on the development of the mind, body and spirit. We believe that the karate of the old Okinawan masters relies on harmonisation of these three elements and this influences our teaching.

At the start of each class, we focus on preparatory training which is more than just a warm-up but is a traditional Okinawan approach to building internal strength, power and coordination. This training uses junbi undo and hoju undo (using traditional Okinawan tools such as the chi ishi and nagiri game jars). This training also includes kihon (basics) and traditional partner drills such as sandan gi and kakie.

This is followed by traditional Okinawan Goju kata where we explore the various self defence applications and how they may be used. We believe that kata applications are the key to self defence and that each  kata needs to be thoroughly understood before moving on to learn new kata.
